Angela Valenza

Angela Valenza, a resident of Dominican Village in Amityville, was born on April 17, 1908 to Maria and Ignatius who had come to the United States from Sciacca, Sicily. She was born and raised on Elizabeth Street in Little Italy where the family owned and operated a grocery store. The family later moved to Brooklyn, Queens and the Rockaways. Angela had six brothers and five sisters all of whom lived beyond seventy five years. She has 145 nieces and nephews. Of her childhood, Angela recalls she loved to play hopscotch and her favorite food was lasagna. To this day, her favorite color is blue and her favorite President is Ronald Reagan. Angela married Joseph Valenza when she was 36 years old, and they were happily married for 51 years. Her husband served in the US Navy during World War I and Angela relates that when four US ships were attacked by German U-boats, Joseph’s ship was the only one to escape unharmed. For 22 years, Angela did clerical work for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.
